What Does an Entry-Level Software Engineer Do?
Fresher software engineer roles usually mean owning small, well-scoped tickets inside an existing codebase — fixing bugs, building a feature end to end under review, writing tests — rather than designing systems from scratch. The first year is as much about learning a codebase and a team's conventions as it is about writing new code.
Skills & Qualifications
Most off-campus drives test data structures & algorithms (arrays, trees, graphs, basic dynamic programming), one language in depth (Java, Python, or C++ are the most common asks), and fundamentals of DBMS, OS, and computer networks. A B.Tech/B.E in CS or a related field is the norm, but candidates from other branches do get through with a strong GitHub profile and projects.
Typical Career Path
Software Engineer I → Software Engineer II → Senior Software Engineer is the common ladder, roughly 2-3 years per step depending on the company. Around the 4-6 year mark, engineers typically choose between a technical (Staff/Principal Engineer) or people-management (Engineering Manager) track.
How to Break In
Two or three solid, deployed projects (not tutorials you followed along with) matter more than a long resume. Practice DSA consistently rather than in a last-minute cram, and apply broadly to off-campus drives — company-specific application windows are usually short, so check the Jobs page often.
