Breaking Into Equity Research as a Fresher in 2026
By Soliyog Team
Equity research is one of the few finance roles where a fresher can walk in with a strong portfolio of work and beat candidates with better pedigree. Here is how the screening actually works.
What desks screen for
- Can you build a model without hand-holding? A three-statement model with working links, not a template you filled in.
- Can you write a one-page thesis? Clear call, three supporting points, the main risk, and a target. No hedging.
- Do you follow markets? You should be able to name a stock you find interesting right now and defend it for five minutes.
Building your first pitches
- Pick companies you genuinely understand — a retailer you shop at, a bank you use — not whatever is trending.
- Read the last two annual reports and the most recent four earnings call transcripts.
- Write the thesis before you build the model. The model tests the thesis; it does not create it.
- Keep it to one page. Length is not rigour.
The realistic route in
Large asset managers rarely hire freshers directly into research. Your path:
- Apply to boutique research firms and brokerages first — they hire freshers more readily and give you real coverage sooner.
- Watch for Research Associate off-campus postings; they open quietly and close fast.
- CFA Level 1 helps signal commitment but is not required for a first interview.
