IT or Finance: Choosing a Track Without Overthinking It
By Soliyog Team
If you are deciding between IT and finance, the honest answer is that both are good careers and the choice matters less than committing to one and building depth. Still, the first three years feel quite different.
How the early years compare
| IT (Software / Data) | Finance (Research / Markets) | |
|---|---|---|
| First-year work | Small tickets in an existing codebase, code review | Supporting an analyst or trader, model upkeep, data pulls |
| What gets you hired | Deployed projects + DSA | A defensible stock pitch + Excel fluency |
| Feedback loop | Fast — code ships weekly | Slower — calls play out over quarters |
| Portability | Very high, global | High within finance hubs |
A framework for deciding
- Do you like fast, tangible feedback? IT ships something every week. Finance rewards patience with a view that takes months to prove out.
- Do you enjoy writing a clear argument? Finance research is a writing job as much as a numbers job. IT is more building than arguing.
- Where do you want to live? IT roles are genuinely location-flexible. Finance concentrates in a few cities.
Next step
Read a guide from each track back to back — the Software Engineer guide and the Equity Research Analyst guide — and notice which day-to-day description you would rather live.
